Report: Former Texas A&M OC Noel Mazzone lands job on Texas coaching staff

Former Texas A&M offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone may not have to leave the state of Texas for his next coaching gig.

According to a report from Rivals.com’s Anwar Richardson, Texas coach Tom Herman is expected to add Mazzone as a quality control coach. This role is not one of the 10 on-field assistant roles that will be available beginning this fall.

Quick Texas notes. I am told former Texas A&M OC Noel Mazzone will join Texas as a quality control coach. Meanwhile, Texas Assistant Director of Player Personnel Bryan Carrington will serve as the program’s 10th assistant coach on an interim basis to help with recruiting.

Mazzone, 60, spent the last two seasons running the Aggies offense in College Station after former coach Kevin Sumlin lured him away from UCLA prior to the 2016 season.

Though Texas A&M and Texas no longer play an annual football game, it is still a move from one side to the other in the heated Aggies-Longhorns rivalry. With Jimbo Fisher’s staff in place and confidence at a new high among the Aggies faithful, some may relish the opportunity to cheer against their former offensive coordinator. Wearing the hated burnt orange only will make things that much easier.

Prior to his stop at Texas A&M, Mazzone spent time as the offensive coordinator at both Ole Miss and Auburn. He also has NFL experience as the former wide receivers coach for the New York Jets.
